THE PROCESS OF URBAN GROWTH IN ATHENS

Abstract
I
|
Research
into the evolution of urban space - distinguishing between planned
and unplanned development and their role in urban growth. Employing
Space Syntax methods of morphological analysis of the city fabric
and its transformations through time, in conjunction with geographic
and demographic data and analysis of land uses and infrastructure,
the research aims to :
·
find underlying patterns of spatial development of the urban fabric
and identify differences or similarities in planned and unplanned
parts. · analyse and understand their relation to the evolution
of the spatial pattern of the city as a whole, and · understand
how these relate to the emergence and development of the morphological
patterns of centres and sub-centres. The focus is on Athens, Greece,
with comparative analysis of other european cities. The research
explores the potential of a systematic approach to urban growth
and regeneration as a process of understanding the functional
dynamics by which the various parts of the city have evolved through
its history, and of preservation of the underlying morphological
principles.
